Jeri Hernandez has been a Hollister resident for 34 years. She and her late husband, Ismael, raised their family here. Over the course of those 34 years, she has made an incredible impact on Hollister. Jeri has been involved with numerous non-profits over the years including be nominated for the Elk’s Lodge Citizen of the Year, her business, Serene Home, was named retail business of the year in 2010 and she has been recognized as Philanthopist of the Year numerous times.
Jeri became a Trustee for the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation in 2010. She served as President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer within her 6 years as a Trustee. She currently is on the San Benito Health Care District Board for Hazel Hawkins Hospital.
Jeri has been a generous and thoughtful donor over the years. This year she chose to make a donation to a cause that was close to her heart. Jeri dedicated a special room in the Emergency Department for young children along with donating laptops designed for ages 0-18, to ease the fear of being in a clinical environment. She commissioned an artist through the San Benito Arts Council to create a mural in the room with a “Cat in the Hat” theme based on the Dr. Seuss book. It has been a welcome distraction for our pediatric patients. She dedicated this room in honor of her grandchildren, Porter and Charlie Hudson who mean so much to her and for the youth of San Benito County. She believes “No child should be frightened by a visit to an ER.”
When COVID-19 hit, she made over 600 individually packed lunches that included lasagna, bread and salad for all the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Employees. She delivered them to the Hospital to show her appreciation for all of the employees hard at work during the pandemic.
Jeri’s goal for the future is to establish an Oncology Department in memory of her late husband and her son whom both suffered from cancer. She says, “No one in my community should have to travel miles away to seek treatment for such a debilitating and gut-wrenching disease.”
Thank you Jeri for all of your dedication to Hazel Hawkins Hospital. It is truly appreciated.
