Happy New Year! I am very honored to serve as Board President of the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation for 2021. This is my sixth year on the board, and I couldn’t be more proud of our hospital and clinics, and the very dedicated and skilled staff that work tirelessly to provide the highest quality of care to members of our community.
Over the last 10 months, we have witnessed the importance and urgency of having access to quality healthcare right here in our own community. COVID has tested our hospital’s staff, facilities and resources, but we have been able to meet these needs through expanded services, increased hospital capacity and invaluable collaboration between our hospital district and county and state agencies. The Foundation stands ready to support these challenges throughout this current COVID surge and beyond.
In recent months, the Foundation has completed our “Mabie Makeover Campaign,” raised over $90,000 through our Annual Fundraiser, purchased new equipment, including a new exam table for the Ortho Clinic and a Hystereoscopy Pump for Surgery Center, and awarded $12,500 in scholarship funding for students entering the medical field. This is just a shortlist of our accomplishments, and I want to thank the Foundation board for their ongoing commitment and support.
On a personal note, I have many fond memories of the hospital that stretch almost 4 decades! My little brother was born at Hazel Hawkins in 1981, and I gave birth to my youngest son there in 2012. And last year before COVID, I got to be a part of the new Dr. Seuss-theme mural in the “”Ouchless” Pediatric Exam Room in the ER, which was painted by artist Venecia Prudencio and was funded by a donation from District Board Member, Jeri Hernandez. I am confident that there will be more good times ahead.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new CEO, Steven Hannah, as well as congratulate Liz Sparling, for being promoted to Foundation Director last summer. I know you both will do an excellent job, and we are fortunate to have you!
It is more crucial now than ever to support our local hospital, and I encourage you to donate to the Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation. Your support and generosity will ensure local, comprehensive and compassionate healthcare for generations to come.
